Southeast Alaska Visitor Center
Ketchikan, Alaska
The Center serves as a prime tourist attraction in downtown Ketchikan.
The Lobby acts as a gallery of local Native and fine art. Schools of salmon swim overhead. A map, situated behind the information desk, identifies the public lands of the six regions of the state. Videos reveal the sights of each region.
Following a walk through a simulated temperate rain forest, visitors are introduced to the Traditional Lifestyle of the Native Haida, Tsimshian and Tlingit tribes.
Through models, world-class photography and interactive graphics, the visitor can experience the Ecosystems of the region: marine, intertidal, estuarine, fresh water, forest, muskeg and alpine habitats.
The condition of Southeast’s Resources (fish, minerals, wildlife, wilderness and timber) are presented in dramatic fashion on platform stage sets that utilize photomurals, cut-out figures, video interviews, contemporary artifacts, objects, models and illustrated graphics.
On a lower level, guests can access a Trip Planning Room in a comfortable lodge-like setting.
