Mendenhal Glacier Visitor Center
Juneau, Alaska
Visitors explore the anatomy, action and ecological impact of the Mendenhall Glacier on the natural and cultural landscape of the Juneau Region.
Entering through a crevasse in the ice-face, visitors discover a research camp on the Juneau Ice Field where they can compare weather conditions and ask experts for answers. A large interactive model reveals how a glacier is formed and how it works. Artistic graphic panels, animated video, and a talking “erratic rock” supplement the story.
A salmon stream diorama and a series of naturalist drawers give visitors a glimpse of the diversity of life affected by the advance and retreat of the glacier.
